Korean Lunch
Did you know: Koreans eat rice and soup for breakfast?
Hungry? Pull up a seat and join us!
My beautiful and funny co-worker, Yumi, invited me out for lunch. I asked her for valuable teaching advice, because my Saturday morning adult class has expanded, and I have no idea what I'm doing!
Dwenjang jiggae, salty fish, kimchi sidedishes, teaching advice ...
A king's spread for man won (5USD each). Boy oh boy I'm going to miss Korean food. Think there's a Korean supermarket in Brockville Ontario? I know Montreal has places you can buy overpriced kimchi. It'll have to do.
PS (sorry to ruin your appetite) but I want to introduce you to my new friend! He eavesdropped on my conversation in a phone booth, last night, but I forgave him. He was leggy and charming:

man won is US$10 isnt it?
That bug shot looks pretty decent. Today my kids showed me a spider they found. Having to be "the teacher" I couldn't act freaked out, but it was the weirdest spider I'd ever seen. It was bigger than that bug of yours, but gold and oddly shaped. I now know where they got the look of the alien spiders in the movie "Starship Troopers". To be honest I'm not sure what scares me more, that hideous spider, or the fact that I just admitted I've seen "Starship Troopers".
Yes, man won is 10... 5$ each
Hi Eva! You can always learn to make kimchi, especially while you are over here, or are you among the new breed of young women (especially here in South Korea) who don't cook at all?
Mr. Kroll, the book, "Starship Troopers," by one of the greatest writers ever, Robert A. Heinlein, is one of the most award winning novels to ever be printed. Take a look at "Stranger In A Strange Land." This book is also amazing. What the Book in Seoul even ships for free if you buy 20,000 won worth of books.
hahhaha .... Paul, that's awesome. I have also seen some rad looking bugs lately.
Where is, "What the Book" John?
PS- Are you a good cook?
I'm not very good yet but I'm starting to get interested because I'm health-nutty lately and want to know what i'm eating.
I hate how expensive fruits and veggies are in SK though. Imported rice and kimchi from China at the kimbap heavens (did you read that article?) is cheaper.
i'll make sure my babies are well fed when/ if the time comes!
Since I live in Daejeon, I use the website -- http://www.whatthebook.com/
I'm an okay cook. However, I just had a great steak with onions, peppers, mashed potatoes, and asparagus. Not bad if I do say so myself.
Watch what you are eating from China. Some of it is questionable in terms of ingredients and toxicity. I do like their Pringles better than the South Korean version though.
Yum! My sister was just here visiting and we went out for Korean food twice. She loves 오징어 볶음 (squid).
Does the fact that you introduced your co-worker as "beautiful" have to do with the Koeran influence on how you view/introduce people?
Oh, and don't worry about Kimchi in Montreal: I'll be sure to always have a jar at my apartment for you -- next to the handcuffs, in case you start talking about running away to Korea again ;)
Hi Eva!
I recently stumbled onto your blog. It's interesting. I really enjoy reading it.
I'm going to Korea in two weeks for a one-month vacation~ I'm from the Toronto area... I can give you the locations of Korean markets in those areas.
I'm not so sure about other areas outside of Toronto though.
Sorry to just pop in randomly..
I just re-read what I wrote and I want to clarify that I do think that Yumi is very beautiful, and I was merely commenting on the fact that Eva's written about people always saying "you look good" instead of "hello" in Korea.
I just want to be clear that I wasn't questioning whether she's beautiful -- in fact; I obviously wouldn't have said that if I though't she wasn't.
I'd title this post "yummy yumi," but I think I've put my foot in my mouth enough for one evening...
l'shana tovah, everyone.
Looks grand.
I will miss Korean food.
Oh my gosh Sam I can't believe you're leaving today. I'll visit you in Nova Scotia sometime! Drop by for a tea : )
All the best of luck with your masters program.
Jiyoon - I was born in Toronto and there's a good chance I'll live there for a while, someday, so yes I'd love to know where the Korean markets are!
Are you Korean Canadian? Do you have family in Korea?
Josh - happy honey cake and apple new year dear man
Hi Eva~ Sorry for the delayed reply~
Yes I am Korean-Canadian and I have family in Korea, but they live in Ilsan.. do you know where that is?
But I'm going to be staying in Seoul during my time in Korea.
There's a big Toronto supermarket called Galleria Supermarket. It's a really big supermarket that expanded to a mini-complex (?), with some shops outside of the supermarket. It's on Yonge St., North of Steeles Ave.
There is another supermarket that is smaller, but it's on Yonge as well, a little more North (closer to Clark Ave as opposed to Steeles Ave) than Galleria. It's called P.A.T. Supermarket.
And if you are ever in the downtown area, go to Christie Station and walk Eastbound on Bloor. You can find some Korean marts and another P.A.T. supermarket there.
=) Hope this helps!
