DVD Bangs, Korea

I had the idea that DVD bangs were like norebang: friendly rooms with bench seats around a table. Not quite! The rooms at DVD bangs are very, very cozy. Why do you think teenagers pay up to 12USD to watch a movie in a private room? Let your mind wander down a dark, dingy alleyway. That's ri-hh-ight!

Koreans live at home until they get married, so even a 30 year old Korean man might not have the privacy he wants. The rooms have a curtain to pull tight but the doors don't lock and, when the movie's over, you're outta there!

Luckily the guy I went with is a good friend, so I wasn't uncomfortable when presented with a tiny leather couch. There's no movie theatre nearby my house and I can't play Korean-region movies on my laptop, so we sought out a local DVD bang. Although our outing was platonic, the guy at the counter got a huge, goofy smile on his face when we (Korean guy/ Western girl) entered the room with our movie of choice: 200 Pound Beauty- a Korean romantic comedy with English subtitles. It was cute and had funny moments, but I can't rave.

Some photos (enjoy):

You could have told us what a bang was. Now we'll just have to wait. Shesh. MUD

Oh wow they are quite petite and cozy! A lot nicer than I expected, too.
haha Bang = Room

I saw that movie a little while ago too. I wasn't particularly impressed, especially when you compare it to some of the really great films to come out of Korea in the last five years.

Hi Eva,

I had the same problem playing Region 3 dvds on my laptop/notebook/hand computer when I arrived in S. Korea. My brother told me about AnyDVD, and it sure does work. You can download it and try it out for free for 21 days. Also CloneDVD allows you to copy dvds very quickly and easily. The bundle price has gone up a bit, but it is still well worth it. BTW, upgrades are free for life.

I found you while googling 'bipimbap' (which I'm eating) and you're now one of my faves. I'll be back.

Ehm. Just one thing, it's not "300 pound beauty" it's "200 pound beauty", at least that's the offical english title if you ask the production company. Just thought I'd let you know.

Ohh, Hey John. Thanks for the movie advice!

Do they not have DVD bangs in Vancouver, Natasha? ;)

Anonymous: Oops! Correct me anytime!

Ed: Yeah. My company (a Korean guy) found the slapstick humor pretty amusing but I was bored.

Still Born: Cool... thanks!

Mud- hahaha you placate me so. I'm sure you were waiting with bated breath.

hi eva,
love you blog. most blogs on korea seem to be very judgmental, purely written to vent out their prejudices and anger at having to choose to work/make money in a country where they are considered celebrates rather than some second class citizens. it was really refreshing to read about a young woman who goes out of her comfort zone ( didn't see much of i-hung-out-with-other-expats-yet-another-weekend)and actually tries to understand another culture. good luck and thank you for sharing your life w/us

I agree with the previous anonymous post. I'm considering teaching in Korea sometime after next May and many of the other teacher sites/blogs I have visited have been so negative. It's apparent that they have made no effort to get in touch with the people/culture as it seems you have done so beautifully. I found your blog by googling Suwon. I will be traveling there this summer to work in Central Baptist Church for a month. Your blog (which I daily 'stalk' now btw) has been highly encouraging and has provided so much information about Suwon and Korea in general. Thanks for being so faithful. I get more excited about my trip(and teaching there) every day thanks to you! ^^

Wow, thank you for your comments! I only have Korean friends and actually feel myself developing Korean-isms... I think returning to Canada to start school will be the biggest culture shock! I get sad thinking about it.

My Korean friends are SO wonderful. They're patient, helpful and welcoming- nothing but kindness.
